Vancouver Girls Soccer Club

For the 2011-2012 season, VGSC is happy to combine our efforts with the Grandview Legion FC.

Registration for the Vancouver Girls Soccer Club occurs from March through September 10th.

Girls’ Programs

The main soccer season runs from September through March, with Divisional teams starting practices in early August. Mini teams will typically start practicing within the first two week of September.

Practices and Game Times

Mini programs (U7-U10)- Practices are held once a week on grass or artificial turf fields, with the youngest teams moving indoors starting in November. Home games are played on Saturdays at John Hendry NW (Trout Lake) anywhere between 9am-1pm. Away games are played throughout the Vancouver Eastside. Regular season play starts September 24th and goes through until mid-March, with a stoppage for Christmas.

Divisional programs (U11-U18) – Practices are held once or twice a week at the coaches’ discretion on grass, all-weather, and/or artificial turf fields. Games are played on Sundays throughout the lower mainland, typically between 9am-3pm.

Uniforms (jerseys, shorts, and socks) are provided by the club; players must have soccer boots and shin guards.

U7 – U8 (VGSC)

The 4 vs. 4 format has many advantages for children of this age. The most important advantage is all the players are able to interact in the game and have fun; touch the ball more often and contribute to their teams.

U9 – U10 (VGSC)

The Mini program is for girls aged 8-9 where the teams play a 7 vs. 7. Smaller team sizes allow players to have more touches on the ball while still learning the basics of team play, formations and positions.

U11 – U12 (VYSA / BC Coastal Girls’ Soccer League)

At ages 10 – 11, girls move to a game format referred to as “Super 8,” where teams play an 8 vs. 8, typically on half of a full-sized field. Teams compete at a variety of skill levels against other clubs in Vancouver with those at the Gold Level playing in the BCCGSL. The focus of the Super 8 program is on passing and positions in a fast-paced format, and provides a great transition from the smaller Mini fields to the much larger full-sized 11 a-side competitive fields.

U13 – U18 (BC Coastal Girls’ Soccer League)

From age 13-17, girls play the traditional 11-a-side soccer game, with teams sizes ranging from 16 to 18 players. Teams compete at a variety of skill levels with other clubs throughout the Lower Mainland and in some cases, the Fraser Valley, Squamish and Sechelt. Games are played on Sundays.

Select Teams

Starting at age 12 (U13), all interested players have the opportunity to try out for Select Teams at Gold and Silver A competitive levels and, at age 13 (U14), the Metro level. Select Teams provide opportunities for girls with advanced skills who want to commit to a more competitive and intensive soccer experience. In most cases these teams practice 2 times a week with games on Sundays. With the competitive nature of soccer these days, it is becoming more and more common for Select Teams to start practicing mid-July or even all year round.

Tryouts

At the end of each season, the club will run player tryout sessions for the 11-17 age groups in order to place players on teams that best suit their soccer skills.

Results of March 9 Merger Votes

Dear VGSC Parents and Players

At our March 9 general meeting,  members were asked to vote on two motions concerning the future of the soccer club.
1    “Be it resolved that VGSC participate in the full merger of East and Central Vancouver soccer clubs with a target date of the 2012-2013 season.”

2    “Be it resolved that VGSC join with Grandview Legion soccer club as of the 2011-2012 season.”

Both motions passed unanimously.  Thanks to all of you who came out to participate in the meeting.

Your board will meet next week with the Grandview Legion FC board of directors to begin working out the logistics of the merger.

Rest assured, we on the VGSC board remain committed to girl’s soccer.  We’ll have a strong presence on the new combined board of directors and will keep on working to protect our daughter’s interests within the club.

Cheers,

Joe Moulins
VGSC President 2010-2011
